"Make
the Connection" Photo Exhibit
in DC and Baltimore
October 3rd & 4th, 2009
On the first weekend of October, FARM took our “Make the Connection” message to the public with help from the Humane League of Baltimore.
The Make the Connection display shows pictures
of humans staged in situations that farmed
animals endure side by side with actual
animal photos and calls on onlookers to
imagine themselves in these horrid conditions.
The 15 panel set-up included a child in
a veal crate, a man and woman hung upside
down for slaughter, a person gasping in
water with a fish hook in her mouth, and
other equally compelling images.
On Saturday, October 3, FARM marked the weekend of World Farm Animals Day by setting up in DC’s heavily trafficked Dupont Circle. The display ran for four hours, with thousands of pedestrians checking out the graphic images. About 300 “Why Vegan?” guides were passed out and over 500 postcard sized handouts were distributed after we ran out of Why Vegan guides.
Dozens of passerby were overheard talking on their cell phones about the display, and “horrific” and “effective” were the two most common words brought up by people who stopped to talk to FARM activists. Several people pledged to go vegetarian or vegan after seeing this powerful display.

The following day, FARM joined activists from the Humane League of Baltimore to set up in Baltimore’s McKeldin Square for four hours. One man commented on the effectiveness of awareness campaigns like these, noting that “corporations will keep slaughtering animals as long as it is profitable for them to do so”, and said the market will continue to change as more and more people learn about the realities of meat, milk and eggs. He said that animal abusing corporations must be very afraid of us.
At both locations, vegetarians and vegans thanked us for being there, and some people even stopped for a few minutes to help us leaflet. Children were especially affected, with many taking the time to look at all 16 panels. This outreach will continue for the entire month of October.
